I stepped out for an errand and into a very rare indulgence, at the Belgian waffle truck that appears weekly on Hanover Square. While I have heard tell of a "Lauren Cerand Effect," that clients jokingly attribute to my work and presence, it's seldom that I see it in action. Anyway, in an exchange of less than five minutes total, the two young guys who work there, one Belgian and one American, and I began to chat about Belgium –– I've been, and adore it, Antwerp especially. Brussels is alright. I had to tread carefully, though; anyone familiar with politics knows that's a fraught landscape. 'What do you like about Antwerp?' the Belgian, who is from the region, asked. 'Oh, that's easy. I'm very into fashion... and diamonds, beer, fries, chocolate –– you know, everything that Belgium is known for.' The American guy was surprised to learn that most diamonds are dealt via Antwerp. He suggested immediately that they do a "diamond" waffle and both set to brainstorming how to capture the sparkle with the topping. 'Well, it doesn't have to be literal,' I pointed out. 'It could be the most expensive one.' 'Yeah, forty dollars, with gold leaf.' We had a laugh, and I naturally encouraged them to see where it goes. 'Would you get one?' he asked. 'Every Wednesday,' I replied, without a beat. Without pausing himself: 'I like your style.'

In Antwerp, visit Rubenshuis and the shops of Dries van Noten and Anne Demeulemeester - both on that main drag next to the quarter. The Royal Art museum has some real stunners, too. If you're feeling adventurous, dinner at Het Pomphuis in Het Eilandje is very dramatic and chic. I liked centrally located Cafe Berlin for every day.
In Brussels, Bonsoir Clara was a fabulous meal. Walking around and looking at the Art Nouveau buildings is always stunning, and don't miss a chance to see the famous painting THE DEATH OF MARAT.

Lauren,
You have pegue. That's the Lauren Cerand effect, from another one who has it.
