What kind of a girl am I? You know. The kind who spins around on a stool at the counter while eating a cashew butter & jelly sandwich, and wearing this, with the requisite red lips to match.

My friend Kate has a new book out called Obsessive Consumption, a clever compendium of her daily drawings of purchases that helped her get out of debt. I own and treasure one (a golden shoe from Mississippi) that Jen gave me as a gift.
Things I bought today: a grey sequin vest and a black leather obi belt at Eileen Fisher in SoHo, to support Girls Write Now (I am the chair of the board). Other places to shop with brains and beauty to our benefit: Significant Objects and Glassybaby. A thing in SoHo that I wished was mine: an old Mercedes.
I also bought milk, two different kinds because they were both appealing. I just used a splash in the mac 'n' cheese I'm making for dinner, with peas and jalapenos and cheddar melted on top with cracked black pepper in my grandmother's iron skillet in the oven. And Cool Hand Luke at the drugstore. For all the obvious reasons.

Changing into something more walkable is always the tricky thing. Tonight I had on Martin Margiela split-toe heels which I set aside for Freed of London ballet flats. I was feeling chic until, somewhere along Fifth Avenue, my sister whipped off her four-inch heels and swapped them for these white boat shoes.

I knew I'd like Portland before I ever set foot there, because of an article I'd seen on MOD, the Portland Mercury's fashion blog, soliciting opinions on the best heels for riding a bicycle. These exude the same feckless pragmatism, with a sly if toothy grin. I don't ride a bike much, except when I'm in Ithaca; I coast down storied hills and then call my father to come and pick me up. In a week I leave for a spell in a knock-around beach town with a borrowed bike as my main means. I might need these, then. Flip-flops are not my stock-in-trade, as you can well imagine.

I read this book about "vibes" on my way back to New York Monday and it was all about developing your intuition and the basic message was: sleep, eat, and take care of yourself and your ability to sense what's going on will be materially improved.
This morning I slept in and went to Cheeky's for breakfast. The first time I went there I rushed in because, after passing by for a couple weeks, I'd had a dream that it was too crowded and I woke up freaked out that it was true. So I rushed down there and it was the usual breezy scene but now they're in New York magazine and the owner always says, my dream is coming true.
Then I went to run some errands and as I was walking back to my place, I took a right on Broome Street and there was Karl Lagerfeld shooting photos on the corner (almost the same spot where Teen Fashionista and I sat in the window of Babycakes and watched "Date Night" being filmed). I liked that even though he had an entourage of assistants, he was taking his own pictures.
And so I've been following the "vibes" plan of chilling out because that's where inspiration comes from, in my life. David Lynch, when he did "Upstairs at the Square," talked about meditation being an integral source of creativity. I heard a panel of authors speak last week and several of them emphasized how important it was to sit at a desk and type. "The muse doesn't come to you when you're out sitting in a field." Funny, that's where I meet her.
