The premiere of The Afterlight last night was amazing, like, beyond belief, and then we went to a party at Villa Medici. Today I went for a picnic among fallen columns in a field at Ostia Antica, the ancient long-abandoned harbor port in the countryside (and closed, like everything else, on Mondays!). Still, who knew so much magic could be made with wine, bread, olives and cheese? There was even a butterfly floating around, and there may be a snapshot somewhere out there, too. Then tonight, it was a twilight stroll through Centro Storico, the historic downtown city center, and along the Tiber and across to Trastavere, the sweet bohemian quarter, and dinner at a lovely little place called Da Enzo with a new friend from LA who I met last night. Tomorrow I might check out the Borgia Apartments at the Vatican (because they figure so heavily in the biography of Lucrezia Borgia I read and loved to distraction a couple of years ago.. who could forget Cesare, her impossibly ambitious brother who came to her wedding dressed as a unicorn and later murdered her husband when he was no longer politically useful to the family?). Or I might succumb to the lure of above-the-elbow black leather gloves at one of the many little shops dotting the streets. Or perhaps something wonderful that has not even occurred to me yet. It it certainly possible here.
Lauren, what was the name of the Lucrezia Borgia bio? Must add it to my list!
