The National Book Foundation is celebrating six decades of recognizing the best in contemporary American literature with a look at past winners. My appreciation of 1981's pick runs today.

Just left a two-week Tibetan Buddhist meditation retreat in Van Etten, New York, about a half hour outside of Ithaca, through Namgyal Monastery. This week I lived in a cottage in a forest clearing with no electricity and stars that went on forever. I miss it already, and sure am happy to shimmy back into my miniskirt.

Earlier this year I spoke at Mickey Hess's (an accomplished author himself, on the great Garrett County Press) creative writing class at Rider University (on my way to a fundraiser for Automotive High in Brooklyn) and met some students who have formed a writing collective. They're putting out a collaborative zine and asked if they could feature some work from Lux Lotus. I sent them a few pieces I've written about places I've been, plus perennial fave, "Dress Like a Cat Until You Get What You Want." Tonight they're having a launch party at a cafe called Starry Night in a little beach/surf town on the Jersey Shore.

Live webinar, with download available after the event
Do magazines matter? Is Twitter the answer? From surveying the
evolving media landscape's new opportunities for publishing to
devising strategies for connecting with your natural readership,
we'll explore what's at the heart of a successful literary
publicity campaign in this energetic, interactive hour-long
workshop. The merits (and practical applications) of bookstore
signings and other events, creative outreach, generating buzz, and
designing a balanced campaign that incorporates the best aspects of 'traditional' public relations and new technological and social
developments to find your ideal audience will be covered, along
with related topics that come up in conversation."
It's all happening at SheWrites, a new community for established and aspiring writers that's free and easy to join and supercool.
