Every year, with the first cool frisson of fall's crisp beginnings as a late summer breeze, I like to envision my aesthetic for the season (Remember last year: "louche beatnik mermaid meets Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," per usual?). This autumn, I like this idea of jazz club coat check girl/opium den/lost Russian princess meets long-locked epic poem's heroine with a dash of early Transatlantic luxury travel by boat. There should also be some Unicorn Tapestry-esque big jewels involved, treasures for our age etc., but that part can come later. And the look of many flawlessly iced cakes in a window, Thiebaud style, but that would just be an allusion, and like, maybe it would show up in my makeup. Now, back down to earth; the translation is Frye boots (these arrived last week), vintage Laura Ashley dresses (ebay is a great source), long v.v. ladylike coats preferably camel or jewel tones (and definitely no capes-- since my soigne sister informed me they'll be the living end in a week or so, I've packed my half a dozen safely away), last year's Anna Corinna bag (still truckin') and of course, gloves. Always gloves. And two tickets to the opera, preferably Romeo and Juliet at the Met on New Year's Eve.

I quite like your idea for autumn...
