As you know, my days/nights/weekend occupation is independent publicity with a focus on creative professionals in the arts. What this means: lots of events. And of course, since I have to go to them, you can be assured that I endeavor to make them all quite sublime.
With that said, there are two evenings in New York next week I am v.v. much looking forward to...
First up on Tuesday (February 6) is "Upstairs at the Square," Barnes & Noble's totally nextwave, FREE event series, on the top floor of the Union Square store, featuring authors and musicians in conversation with host Katherine Lanpher. I spend a lot of time on this project, both as a part of the creative team that helps put it together and of course, getting the word out. Join us on Tuesday at 7pm (sharp; doors open at 6) for an evening with Paul Auster, who discusses his new novel, and chanteuse Sophie Auster, who is pure magic.
Besides events, arts and film, and really, whatever interests me, I also do literary publicity, and I only take on the books that I could not live without. Right now I am working on a brand-new novel that I find absolutely mesmerizing: Gayle Brandeis' Self Storage (Random House/Ballantine, January 27). It's the politically resonant story of a woman whose habit of buying and reselling storage unit contents sets her on a path of self-discovery inspired by Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself." Next Saturday (February 10), Gayle will be in town and so we're having a party (7pm, Bluestockings, FREE). I asked Kelley McRae if she'd like to perform a few of her brilliant songs and she said yes! (I pretty much play her album over and over again like a freak so it's hard to pick my favorites, but definitely check out: Johnny Cash, Morning Song, What Ya Get is What Ya See). And I am sure that we'll all go out for drinks afterward and it will be so best, and yes, you say yes, too. Please do.
