A friend of Lux Lotus in Los Angeles sends in a report on recent stylish doings there (Note: letters from anywhere are always adored. Please send to correspondence at laurencerand dot com with "Letter from PLACE" in the subject line. They can be about anything, or nothing).
LA Fashion Week concluded on Friday with Kevan Hall's colorful and funky show featuring Jodi Whatley's debut on the runways. Cameron Silver's dispatches from the tents for Style.com's Tent Talk blog reminded me of the "You Wear It Well" fashion film screening this August because Kevan Hall, in a sheer floral shirt, sat in front of me at the screening while Cameron held court with his friends in the back of the patio at Cine-Space. At the time, I was amazed at how friendly L.A.'s fashion folk seemed.
The crowd enjoyed the film festival organized by Diane Pernet and Dino Dinco and weren't too cool to shriek with glee for local Jeremy Scott's fashion/films. Attendees were upbeat and mingled freely. In addition to Kevan and Cameron, I saw Booth Moore and her husband, Cherry Vanilla, Merle Ginsberg, artist/Atelierzero.com calendar listserv owner, Fumiko Amano, and stylist to the stars, Arianne Phillips, in a white bubble dress. You can relive the glorious event by reading Dino's write-up.
The L.A. crowd loved Liam Sullivan's short "Shoes" the best and the film won an award for the most popular short. However, I liked Ruben Toledo's short "Fashionation," which took an animated trip through fashion history.
After viewing all the Spring '07 collections, I'm struck by how much Hussein Chalayan's amazing fashion show, involving automated dresses morphing into mini-fashion history lessons, resembled Toledo's work. I wonder if the film influenced Chalayan's innovative vision.
Well, it's very hot here right now. Too hot to think of anything but shade.
