Do check out the May issue of O Magazine for a brilliant first-person essay (p. 284-6), accompanied by the perfect photograph (scanned, above), by Michelle Herman on her relationship with her daughter, Grace. Herman's first nonfiction book, a collection of essays called The Middle of Everything: Memoirs of Motherhood, is stunning in its emotional intricacy and highly provocative. The publisher presumed the audience for the book would be people with children, but it's actually written more for everyone who has a mother (not to mention those who find Caitlin Flanagan's thinking on similar subjects too banal and deluded for words).
