This afternoon, I went to the Mercantile Center Library for Fiction and had an extremely productive, intriguing meeting and discovered all kinds of connections, too numerous to mention... From there, I attended the Asian Womens Giving Circle's Celebration of Arts & Activism, on behalf of Girls Write Now, which is a current grant recipient. Bluestockings was there and I bought a copy of Babyji, and a necklace by Janet Kim that takes my breath away. It's simple (and was inexpensive), a vintage red Lucite "O" on a short sterling chain, but something of it conjures up the whole beauty of the universe in a glance. Most surprising, though, is the fact that the venue, Gana Gallery in West Chelsea, is currently hosting The Garden at 4 AM, an exhibition curated by my friends Paul Laster and Renee Riccardo, which I very much wanted to see and now I have! With works by Louise Bourgeois, Ryan McGinness, Marilyn Minter and others, it's quite a gem. Also this boy, a man, I guess, who I ran into at Idlewild Books last week after once or twice speaking on the phone about seven years ago (!) sent me an invitation to a party and signed it "With love and squalor." And what's not to like about that?
