All I Ever Wanted

"I'm having a vacation, and it's so beautiful, and maybe I'll never get another film idea in my life.” -- Lars von Trier

While I'm deeply enamored of every single thing I'm working on, I've also long realized that if I'm going to do the best, most innovative and forward-thinking work for my clients that I can do, I need to recharge and refresh now and then. To that aim, I'm thinking about squeezing in a little spring break between events in the next month or two, but, once again, I'd love your intriguing suggestions. Europe is out because I feel like a peasant given the exchange rate, and there aren't too many places in the U.S. I haven't been to or would like to revisit save maybe New Mexico, Big Sur, and Marfa, TX. I like city breaks in general but the mellow vibe that suits me as I ponder likely contains the search terms: chillax, laid back, beach, out-of-Blackberry-range. But I'm open to anything, anywhere, as long as it piques my curiosity. Any ideas? Where have you always wanted to go? Where was the best trip (or when was the best travel moment) of your life so far? Please do tell; I'm all ears and eager imagination...

I'm still a sucker for Argentina, which is where I studied in college. I haven't been back since 2001, but friends who have traveled there lately continue to fall in love with it.

But get out of Buenos Aires. Go to La Plata, Mar del Plata, Ushuaia, cross the river on the BuqueBus (the bus boat) and visit Colonia in Uruguay.

And eat argentinian ice cream at Freddo's. It's a chain, but it is the best. The. Best.

I also hear that vietnam is nice, although I've never visited.

Guadeloupe or Martinique, but they are Euroized.
Merida
Acapulco
La Paz

My best travel moment thusfar has to be when I visited Sissinghurst, Monk's House, and Charleston all in the same day. England is still my favorite place in the world, and it was the first time I had seen Firle and Sussex--also being in the homes of the Bloomsberries was exhilarating.

Having checked my email before looking at LL this morning, I can't tell you how stunned and delighted I was to receive notes saying things like, "P.S. I second whoever suggests Colonia in Uruguay. Such an easy pop over from Buenos Aires." This is enchanting, and thank you to all who have shared your thoughts. Please keep them coming! XO, LC.

Beaches? Warmth and sunshiny-ness? Remote-ish?

Everyone I know who's traveled to Turks and Caicos can't say enough marvelicious things about their vacation:

I vote for Marfa.

Ohhh..... I would go back to Cap Juluca Resort in Anguilla in a heartbeat. Four days of blissy luxury, truly. Mmm, closer to home, Spanish Bay Resort in Pebble Beach and Mirabeau Spa in NY's Finger Lakes area, near Skanatles. Lovely all around. Ah, and Ten Thousand Waves Spa and Resort in Santa Fe, near the Ski Basin.

Although it's probably out of the question for this time around, keep Tasmania's Hobart in mind for a future (extended) getaway. It's a chillax city out of range of almost everything, but still offers up style with new boutiques like the Henry James Art Hotel. It's incredibly laid back, with a distinct artsy vibe, esp. in North Hobart. And only short distances to endless beaches and green, green, green.

oops, it's Henry Jones:

I'm a regular reader, although I've never commented on anything before I thought I would considering this post is (like alot of what you write) exactly the same as what I think. As of right now I am on a worldwide adventure of sorts. I am in New Zealand, and let me tell you, if you ever have a chance... it's a little far from where I assume you are but it's the most marvelous, fresh place I've ever been. I am staying in the "city of 100 beaches", and it's too beautiful. there is snow in the south island and beautiful weather in the north. the grass is always green, and the people are unbelievably pleasant. put it on your 'places to visit' list. =)
