The thing about this lamp that I like is that it seems slightly off-kilter from a design perspective, like it came from somewhere far away. I think the fact that it was an early expression of modernism, created in 1907 by avant-garde (even by today's terms) designer Mario Fortuny (who also brilliantly pleated silk in the "Goddess"-style gowns he made), gives it a "people used to dream about the future" vibe. I like it for all the same reasons that I find steampunk compelling. Plus, in black it's a sort of perfect anti-spotlight. And what could be more elegant than that?
