Tonight, I went to a "carnival"-themed benefit in Red Hook for a local arts organization that was organized by some good friends. It was surprisingly fun and completely, expectedly loopy. I anticipated this because it was not my first visit to the taxidermy-themed bar where the party took place. Also, there is some excellent barbeque available next door; some of the best in the city. The portions are huge and very delicious, and you can get an order "to go" and eat it in the taxidermy-themed bar. Later, after I had a couple of drinks, I fed some of my leftover pork shoulder to a friendly little dog in the bar (when I wasn't requesting "FREEBIRD", obviously). The program began when Alicia Goranson, perhaps best known as the original "Becky" on Roseanne, performed a pantomime act. Then, my friend Bill's brother, who was in drag and resembled one of the bearded lady cross-dressers from Little Britain, did a circus trivia giveaway. I answered one question correctly ("The Flying Wallendas") and won a Channel Thirteen tote bag, which came in handy later when I won four cookbooks in the raffle. Bryan won two rounds, which earned him a Concert for George CD and an Ernie (of "Bert and" fame) hand puppet. Splendid fashion statements were on display. Bill cut off his jeans at the knee so that he could wear authentic knee-high riding boots. Tricia's free-floating diamond necklace nicely set off her silver sequined handband and navy Marc Jacobs-y military-style jacket. More than one guy was sporting a handlebar moustache, and the accordion player had on an excellent bowler plus vest look that was very vaudeville. Bill's other brother did a set of Gram Parsons and Howlin' Wolf covers and was wearing an extremely glamorous cape that impressed me very much. At one point, Richard Fearless from Death in Vegas stopped by our booth to chat a friend. He had on a great skinny orange-and-white striped scarf. Also, a band called Pinataland did an alt-country-ish set that included a perfect evening-ending cover of "Dancin' in the Dark." Best of all, the car service only took five minutes to arrive and I was home in ten minutes. 'Night.
