The Limits of One's Love Don't Quite Cover the Map, Do They?
I've been cruising Site59.com lately, keeping an eye out for rock-bottom cheap weekend packages to Houston (The Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel) or Cincinnati (Contemporary Arts Center) for a quick jaunt to places I'd like to see in cities I have no desire to spend more than a day or two enduring exploring.
As long as we're on the subject of places I don't particularly want to visit for any reason other than a specific art or architecture experience, I can add Pittsburgh (The Warhol), Western Pennsylvania (Fallingwater), Marfa, Texas (The Chinati Foundation), Dallas, Texas (Nasher Sculpture Center), Quemado, New Mexico (The Lightning Field), and West Adams, Massachusetts (Mass MoCA) to the list. And at some point, I'll have to go back to Denver, and as long as I'm out that way, Arcosanti in the middle of nowhere Arizona desert could be worth a look.
I could probably drive around for a week or two and knock them all out, couldn't I? That would be a fantastic road trip. Oh yeah, and Bryan's grandfather built a life-sized statue (second item) of a T. Rex in Wyoming that sounds pretty sweet.
The most notable international examples that come to mind are Brasilia, Brazil and Hauterives, France (Ferdinand Cheval's Le Palais Ideal).
