Truth in Beauty

CoralreefLucille Whitaker, an old friend of mine and the sort of person who always seems to be having a rare flash of brilliance, is having a show of her work (which will absolutely blow your mind in person)  in San Francisco.

"Art with Conscience: Environmental Narratives in the Work of Lucille Whitaker," is presented by Presidio World College (where she is currently pursuing an MBA in Sustainable Management) and Syntony Quest: Art with Conscience. The exhibition will be on display from June 4 until June 30, and is part of the U.N.'s World Environment Day 2005. Noted:

This exhibit consists of three series of paintings which address three current global issues: endangered species, hunger, and the protection of old growth forests. The paintings seek to inform and inspire, helping us to see the possibilities for positive change while asking us to properly value the precious resources we have. A significant portion of proceeds for paintings sold will be donated to organizations that are working to address these issues. Specifically, the endangered species series will serve to help the World Wildlife Fund, the hunger series will be used to support Heifer.org (providing livestock to starving families, globally), and a series about Cathedral Grove (and other local treasures) will work toward protection of old growth forests. The work spans a variety of media (oil, watercolor, pastel, and silk).

Location: Crissy Field Center, Presidio at Mason & Halleck Street.

The work seen here, Endangered Coral, is "inspired by the World Wildlife Fund and Red List photos & documentary. This work is also inspired by a special ancient coral fossilized over the centuries & considered holy by Tibetan monks."
